WRI US Transport and Climate Intern / World Resources Institute / Washington, DC

World Resources Institute/Washington, DC (DC Metro Area) Overview: EMBARQ – The World Resources Institute Center for Sustainable Transport is looking for a full-time (37.5 hours/week), 12-week intern to work closely with the EMBARQ's U.S. Transport and Climate Project staff. The intern will assist with research, writing, program development, and legislative tracking. The intern may also write blogs for TheCityFix.com, an online resource for sustainable transport news. Immediate start date preferred. This position is located in EMBARQ's Washington, D.C. office near Union Station. The pay is $10-$12 per hour (depending on qualifications) and offers the opportunity to connect with sustainable transport advocates and experts from around the world. Responsibilities: Research * Track legislation, congressional hearings, briefings and related news; * Provide in-depth analysis of legislative proposals, federal (?) initiatives and related news; * Conduct time-sensitive analyses of developments in the U.S. transport and climate arena; * Conduct in-depth research on a variety of topics including urban planning, transportation and climate change. Writing * Summarize draft and current legislation and other proposals; * Assist in writing working papers, research products and fact sheets; * Review, edit and format documents of varying length; * Contribute blog posts to TheCityFix.com; * Write summaries of events and news for EMBARQ.org and monthly newsletter. Administrative and Miscellaneous Tasks * Schedule meetings and assist with events; * Assist with grant management. Requirements: * Current graduate student or recent graduate (Master's degree preferred) in Transportation, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, Public Policy or a related field; * Coursework, research and/or experience in urban or transportation planning, urban design, public health, emissions inventories, energy & environmental policy, and/or transportation policy; * Excellent analysis, research and writing skills, including attention to grammatical and formatting details; * Highly organized and detail-oriented; * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; * Enjoys working in a fast-paced, nonprofit environment; * Ability to work independently with little supervision; * At least intermediate familiarity with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and related programs; * Demonstrated interest in and/or knowledge of transportation, environment and urban planning; * Fluency in English. * Familiarity with smart growth planning, multimodal or non-motorized transportation planning, social equity issues and/or current transportation and climate legislation a major plus; * The ideal candidate is motivated, flexible, creative, works well alone and in groups, enjoys brainstorming and has excellent public speaking skills and outreach abilities; * Additional language skills, study abroad and/or foreign travel experience preferred. Salary & Benefits: $10-$12 per hour, depending on qualifications, without benefits. Location & Term: Located in Washington, D.C., for 12 weeks, starting immediately.
